The latest product for intelligent grid from Siemens’ is its RUGGEDCOM RX1400 multiprotocol intelligent node. With a compact form factor and multi-function capability, it offers a cost saving solution for large scale deployments by avoiding the need for multi-device solutions to achieve the needed interface, switching, routing and application hosting capabilities.

It combines Ethernet switching, wireless LAN, routing and firewall functionality in one, and as a cellular router, it eliminates the need for extensive communication infrastructures.

The RUGGEDCOM VPE1400 provides a virtualised environment to run a guest Linux operating system and third party applications on the RX1400, enabling intelligence at the network edge.Virtualisation allows a full Linux image (with dedicated storage media and I/O ports) to run in parallel with the RUGGEDCOM ROX II, using a Linux KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) based solution. The KVM ensures that the guest OS and third party applications can run without impacting RUGGEDCOM RX1400 core services running on the system.

E&T regularly cover the electricity distribution sector, a recent example is Microgrids and Electricity Distribution.
